Water saving tips for your home and business
By Brian Gay
Water is crucial to Spa, however that does not mean we should
encourage water waste in a spa. I believe that there are
many ways that spas can manage the use of water – impacting
both the environment and also the financial resource of a
spa. Here are just a few facts that you may not know about
water use and some hints on how to reduce overall use in
you spa.
The treatment area
- don't leave the tap running in the salon basin if you are
not using the water to rinse hair
- turn off the tap whilst
applying cleaning solutions to equipment – turn
it back on when you are ready to rinse
- implement treatment
protocols that will enable the therapist to reduce overall
water usage – i.e.
if the vichy shower has showerheads with individual shut
off valve, design a treatment program
that has 2-3 heads on at a time.
- use towels to keep clients
warm during a vichy shower treatment to reduce the need to
run all shower heads at one time
- choose combination treatment
units such as capsules, as the capsule enables the client
to remain warm during treatment
and overall water usage can be reduced significantly – talk
to a HydroCo training expert who can advise the treatment
method
- incorporate timers in shower design
The bathroom:
- replacing a single flush toilet with a 6/3 dual flush can
save up to 8 litres (2.11 gallons) per flush or for the
average family 36,180 litres (9557 gallons) per year
- leaking toilets can waste up
to 16,000 litres (4226 gallons)
per year
- older style shower heads can use up to 24 litres
(6.3 gallons) per minute. Install a AAA-rated shower head
which
uses 9 litres
(2 gallons) per minute, depending on water pressure,
location and quality of pipework
The spa laundry:
- you can use up to 120 litres (31.7 gallons) each time
you use the washing machine. When buying a new washing
machine look for one that is water and energy efficient
- front-loading washing machines use 40% less water than top loading
washing
machines
The preparation room:
- a running tap can use up to
15-20 litres per minute (4 – 5.2
gallons )
- an average dishwasher uses 35 litres (9.2 gallons)
per wash so follow the
manufacturer’s instructions and maximise its use
- don't rinse
dishes before loading into dishwasher
Outside the front doors :
- don't cut lawn shorter than 2cm
- mulching your garden can save
up to 73% of water lost through evaporation
- a forgotten
sprinker can waste 1000 litres (220 gallons) of water per
hour
- install
garden irrigation systems and watering timbers
- moisture
sensors are useful for detecting when your garden has had
enough water
- water during the cooler periods of the day
- early morning or late evening
- install a
rainwater tank that can provide some water for your spa
